Cycle Exeter is encouraging cyclists to be safe and be seen on the road with Bright Up Week, starting today.

The Devon County Council-run organisation is targeting the significant proportion of cyclists that ride sans-lights – up to a third of riders, according to Cycleguard research in 2008.

Forming part of the Freedom of Your City campaign, Cycle Exeter will feature a number of local incentives, including discounts on bike lights and free cycle confidence training.

Zsolt Schuller, Devon County Council’s Cycle Exeter Project Manager, commented: “With the evenings drawing in and twenty per cent of children in Exeter regularly cycling to school, all road users need to take extra care and look out for others.

"We want people to carry on enjoying the freedom of our city all year round – we don’t have to put our bikes in the shed just because winter is on its way. Our next challenge is to help people cycle safely and with confidence during these darker months.”

Mountain bike trials rider Andrei Burton is lending his support to the campaign with a video aimed at younger riders to demonstrate the importance of riding with lights. He said: “It’s really important to be bright and visible on your bike over the winter months. Check out my cool, new video online to see me ‘brighten up’ and show you how you can too!”
