Last week it was confirmed to BikeBiz that IKEA would be retailing bikes in its UK stores - the firm has since revealed details on its SLADDA bike, including pricing.

Available from August 1st 2016, the RRP is slightly lower than we expected - £450 or £349 for 'Ikea Family Members'.

Equipped with a belt drive that is said to last 15,000km (9,300miles), the aluminium frame bike comes with an automatic two gear system, double kick stand for 'steady loading' and features a click in knob for hooking accessories like a trailer from. As expected, there are 26 and 28 inch frame options.

Eagle-eyed pundits may have spotted details on the SLADDA thanks to its award win last week. At the prestigious Red Dot Design Awards it picked up 'Best of the Best' in the Product Design category. It was made in partnership with Veryday design studio and designers Oskar Juhlin, Jan Puranen and Kristian Eke.

The bike comes with a 25-year guarantee on the frame and ten-year guarantee on the belt drive.

So, is this yet another competitor for the beleaguered independent bike dealer? The SLADDA is squarely aimed at urban living, so if you largely sell sporty road bikes or downhill MTBs then it's safe to rest easy. Arguably, the SLADDA isn't about to steal many bike sales away from your average bike shop, so perhaps IKEA is something the trade can largely welcome, particularly if it can help the UK cycle trade crack the elusive everyday/utility market.

Marcus Engman, Head of Design at IKEA, said: “At IKEA, we're not just making things - we're using design to make things better. We work with what we call Democratic Design, where we make sure our products have great function, are beautifully designed and made to stand everyday life while being sustainable - all made accessible through low prices.”

Oskar Juhlin, Director Industrial Design at Veryday, added: "SLADDA is like a tablet with apps, in the sense that you can customize it with several different accessories adapted to make everyday life easier for the user. SLADDA enables the user to replace the car, and by doing so contributing to a more eco-friendly environment.”
