Another clothing label with a fresh take on cycle clothing goes for crowdfunding with light up casual wear

Lumo safety clothing goes live on Kickstarter

Fresh off the back of Huez taking to Kickstarter to crowdfund its cycle clothing, Lumo has today gone live, though this time vying for the spend of the safety-concerned commuting and leisure cyclist.

Started by Brit couple Doug Bairner and Lucy Brown, Lumo’s vision is to help city cyclists be seen with casual cycle wear that packs in hidden LEDs.

Co-founder, Bairner explains where the inspiration came from: “City cyclists don’t just dress for the journey, we dress for the destination too. Until now high quality cycling wear has largely been targeted at weekend warriors. We want to change that and make beautiful garments that are designed for city riding and living. Our mission is to help as many people as possible to experience the realisation that cycling is the most sustainable and satisfying way of getting from A to B. That’s why we’re also pledging to donate 10 per cent of our profits annually to projects and charities that help to get people onto bikes. Cycling shouldn’t be a privilege, it should be an accessible mode of transport for everyone.”

To begin with the pair are looking to manufacture jackets and backpacks. LED strips are positioned on the front and back, subtly hidden within the construction of the design. The lights are visible from over 400 metres away and their placement has been deliberate to ensure they’re visible regardless of riding position. The LEDs are completely waterproof and washable and are powered by a removable USB-rechargeable battery unit that is tucked away in a small inside pocket.

In addition, Lumo jackets are also loaded with cycling-friendly features like a Schoeller 3XDRY finish to ensure water-resistance, dirt repellence and breathability. There’s also dropped hems, inner cuffs, stretch shoulders and lots of useful pockets.

Jackets are available in both men’s and women’s sizes and are priced from £200 on Kickstarter, with the backpack available from £150, making them comparable in price with other high end cycling wear, but with the added benefit of the lighting system.
