BikeBiz speaks to Lusso’s John Harrison…
How long has the company been established?
It all started around 30 years ago with a roll of cloth and two sewing machines – me the cyclist (John Harrison) and my wife Dorothy, a machinist, desperate to make a decent and comfortable pair of cycling shorts that didn’t cost the earth.
After racing for many years for Great Britain in the World Championships, Peace Race and Tour of Bohemia I finally got a decent pair of shorts and a comfy bum.
Can you tell us about the range?
Our range consists of four styles of shorts and five styles of bib shorts ranging from budget to pro rider with the latest gel inserts, full range of S/S and L/S Jerseys, winter thermal breathable waterproof clothing. There’s a full range of thermal tights and bib tights, arm and leg warmers for winter and summer, overshoes, gillets, wicking base layers, skull caps and balaclava.
We’ve got capes – lightweight, foldaway and transparent jacket, full range of ladies and children’s winter and summer garments manufactured in the UK. All our fabrics are sourced from Europe and we only use the best of the Italian cycle inserts, trying to keep the carbon footprint as low as possible.
What is your best seller?
Our best seller in the summer is the pro gel bib shorts which retails at £59.99. For winter, it’s the Max Repel Bib Tights, which are also £59.99.
Does the range change every season or more gradually?
We like to change our range approximately every two years, but the best sellers just seem to need a nip and tuck every now and then – like the Pro gel bibs and Repel range. But for the 2012 range we have had our biggest shake up yet and changed over 50 per cent of the garment range.
