Serious injuries and deaths for cyclists dropped in 2009 in Scotland, according to the latest Government statistics, via Road.cc.
Deaths fell from nine in 2008 to five in 2009. The figure was a rise, however, from 2007’s four.
Cycle casualties classed in the killed and serious category fell by four per cent in 2009, from 163 to 156. Compared with the 1994-1998 average casualties in the category fell by 37 per cent.
That long-term fall was also seen in the total number of road casualties – including non-severe injuries. That total also fell by 37 per cent compared with the 1994-1998 average. Compared with 2008, however, the total number of cyclist casualties rose by ten per cent, from 730 to 803 in 2009.
Child casualties made up 19 per cent of the total 803 pedal cycle casualties in 2009.
