Amongst the plunder were 31 bikes, some rare in the UK. They include Norcos (Six-Twos, Shore 3, Sasquatch and Big Foot), two Magura test bikes (small/medium sizes) and a Gary Fisher Fat Possum (XO model).

“It’s a set-back,” said Martin Stout of Wood n’ Wheels.

“But we aim to bounce back. Within the next four months our new building should be up and running, offering better security and facilities. Some of the bikes stolen are highly distinctive and probably now have scuff marks. We’d urge anyone with information on their whereabouts to contact us.”

Wood n’ Wheels is offering a reward for information leading to the detection of the thives.

Alex MacLennan, Recreation, Communities and Tourism Manager with the Forestry Commission, said:

“We're doing all we can to assist, but we are confident bikers will also rally round and help Wood n’ Wheels get over this set-back. The bike centre is at the heart of our plans to create a top mountain biking experience in Hamsterley. Plans to create a purpose built facility remain fully on track.”

Anyone with information on the Hamsterley raid should contact Martin Stout on 01388 488222 or Durham Constabulary.
