KB Cycles of Newburn on Tyneside was flooded after heavy rains hit northern England, and then thieves struck, doubling the agony

£30k in bikes stolen from flooded bike shop

KB Cycles of Newburn was looted last night, with thieves stealing £30,000 worth of bicycles. Earlier yesterday the shop had been flooded when the Tyne flooded following two days of torrential rain. KB Cycles has been trading since 2006 and is a stockist of bikes from Trek, Scott and Pinarello.

Newburn is five miles from the centre of Newcastle.

Police later arrested a man and woman on suspicion of the theft, and recovered nine bicycles.

Acting Chief Supt Dave Byrne of Northumbria police said: "It is despicable of people taking advantage of the bad weather and using it as an opportunity to break in to properties."
