Bicycle is beating WWW and vaccination in 'best ever invention' poll

When the UK Patent Office carried out a similar poll in 2002, the bicycle was hailed as the "best invention of the past 150 years." Radio 4 - which conducted the poll - said, uncharitably, there had been an "orchestrated campaign" to promote the bicycle ahead of the car, the computer, the light bulb and the television. The current poll is being run by The Times. Feeling musical? Conduct yourself over to this polling website...

"Pedal power has the edge on steam engines and jet propulsion in the eyes of Times readers, according to the first round of voting in the Great British Inventions contest," reports The Times.

"The bicycle has emerged as a surprise front-runner in the poll to find the country’s most significant technological breakthrough of the past 250 years, comfortably seeing off competition from railways and aircraft to win the transport category."

And the bicycle is out in front in the second and final round of voting, at 33 percent of all votes cast so far. Electricity is on 29 percent, vaccination is on 19 percent, and computers and the Internet are trailing at 12 percent.
