Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish is to ride in this month’s National Elite Road Race Championships to be held in Stamfordham, Northumberland, on Sunday 26th June. Cavendish will also ride in the Leazes Criteriums, a Newcastle city centre race held in Leazes Park, close to St. James' Park football ground. These two events are part of the Northern Rock Cyclone weekend of cycling, an event organised by Peter Harrison, owner of Cycle Logical, a Newcastle bike shop.

Two months ago Harrison was badly injured when he fell from his bike at speed during a factory visit to Orbea in Spain. He was air evacuated back to the UK and has only recently been released from hospital.

Securing Mark Cavendish for both the Friday night crits and the national road race championships is a coup for Harrison.

The Team Highroad – HTC rider will be riding in Newcastle just a week before he lines up for this year’s Tour de France. If he were to win the National Elite Road Race Championships race he would wear the National Champions jersey in international races.

The National Elite Road Race Championships take place on the same weekend as the Northern Rock Cyclone weekend, which also includes the Northern Rock Cyclone Challenge on Saturday 25 June when up to 5,000 riders will take to the roads of Northumberland, sharing parts of their courses with the national race.
