The 'Pedal with the Parcs' series of "mega bike rides" will take place in the summer. Two charities will benefit: SPARKS, the sports celebs charity for children's medical research, and the National Byway, the leisure cycling route signing organisation which became a charitable trust in June last year.

Center Parcs creates charity bike ride series

"Cycling is right at the heart of Center Parcs’ ethos," reports ‘Village Life’, the customer magazine of the upmarket holiday parks company.

The bike ride series will take place over four consecutive weekends in the summer and include rides in the guest-only parks as well on country lanes close to the four parks at Whinfell forest in Cumbria, Longleat forest in Wiltshire, Elveden forest in Suffolk and Sherwood forest in Nottinghamshire.

The ‘Pedal with the Parcs’ series will be open to the public as well as Center Parcs’ guests.

The Center Parcs website will have further details on the series from 3rd April onwards. Or register interest at pedalswiththeparcs@centerparcs.co.uk

The National Byway is to be one of the beneficiaries of the cash raised from the charity bike ride series.

Much of the 4000-mile National Byway route has now been sign posted and route maps published.

The Byway will be completed by summer 2007, said the National Byway’s operational director, Michael Breckon.

Breckon was formerly the marketing manager at Raleigh and has the enviable task of researching and riding all the routes he maps for inclusion in the National Byway, a route signing initiative seed-funded with £500 000 from Hovis (hence the Byway’s wheat-sheaf logo).

The Byway, supported by a variety of local authorities across the UK, was launched in 1996 by Breckon, Vic Emery and road race organiser Alan Rushton.

The organisation became a charitble trust in June 2005, trustees include cycling writer Anne Mustoe. ‘Voice of cycling’ Phil Liggett sits on the trust’s advisory council as do Olympic gold medal winner Chris Boardman, and Phillip Darnton, president of the Bicycle Association and chair of Cycling England.

"There is still a lot to be done," said Breckon.

"I am looking forward to cycling those stretches of the route yet to be finalised. But we are getting ever-closer to our completion target of 4000 miles and hope to have achieved it by spring 2007."
