Many of the exhibitors at the trade-only National Cycle and Leisure Show series of roadshows are displaying top notch kid's bikes. Raleigh, Ideal, Giant and others have 24-inch wheel bikes with aluminium frames, making them lighter than the ten tonne steel frames children are normally palmed off with.
