Cyclewise was due to open a new outlet in Cockermouth, Cumbria, at the weekend and despite the devastation left in the wake of Storm Desmond, the shop kept on schedule and opened on Saturday morning, BikeBiz is happy to report.

The shop confirmed that it had launched as planned, despite the region's 'Biblical weather’. Director Richard Martin told BikeBiz: "We did [open] ........just. What a weekend to open our new shop.

"The opening went ahead as planned but then we started to realise that something was wrong when we started to get reports of rainfall and flooding. I managed to get back to Penrith on Saturday with about two mins to spare with the A66 closing behind me."

"The reality is both our premises have got off lightly, others not so lucky. The damage at the bottom of our pass in incredible.

"We are getting lot of support and goodwill...we do need it.

"However we are all picking ourselves up and getting back to normal as soon as we can."

Cumbria is among the worst hit areas of the country, with over 2,500 homes without power (Source: BBC) and the army evacuating residents across Carlisle, Keswick and Appleby. 55,000 Lancaster homes were without power at points over the weekend.
