The scheme will offer new cyclists access to CTC local groups, CTC events and Cyclists Welcome at member prices, the organisation’s bi-monthly magazine Cycle and all the other benefits that full members currently enjoy, at 50 per cent of the standard membership fee.
Introductory members will be able to upgrade to full membership at the end of their first year. The aim of the initiative is to give cycle-users a low cost introduction to CTC.
Clive Oxx, the CTC national councillor seconding the proposal at CTC’s AGM on Saturday said: "This is a pilot to help fulfil the aims of Vision 2000, our five year plan. We want to widen the range of our membership and attract people who are less committed or entirely new to cycling such as families, commuters and mountain bikers."
The move follows CTC’s £10 membership offer to U-26s introduced last October. U-26 membership has increased by 30 percent since then.
At Saturday’s meeting, members unanimously sanctioned an increase in subscriptions in line with inflation and the anticipated increase in third party insurance costs. From October, individual membership will cost £28.50, a rise of £1.50, and family membership £46, up from £43.50. The introductory rate will be £13.50 until October when it will rise to £14.25.
Brian Morris, chair of CTC’s operations committee said: "Foot and mouth, the increase in third party insurance costs and the cancellation of events last year all substantially affected our income and to continue our work for cycling we must be able to pay for it."
