Yorkshire facility snaps up Environment Award

Dales Bike Centre scoops award

The owners of the Dales Bike Centre at Fremington have recently picked up a green award, as reported in The Shields Gazette.

Dales Bike Centre owners Mike and Brenda Price landed the Yorkshire Post’s 2009 Environment Award for their efforts to save energy and reduce waste.

The Prices set up the Centre just before Christmas 2008, following five years of groundwork. The facility includes accommodation, a café, bike hire, bike sales and a workshop, with eco-friendly features like a water recycling bike wash, a heat exchange kitchen ventilation system, a ground-source heating system and various other green intitatives.

Mike Price, a former South Shield resident, said: "We have been working on the bike centre project for five years, and we finally got it open just before Christmas.

"We got a lot of funding from Yorkshire Forward and its Rural Enterprise Investment Programme, and Yorkshire Dales National Park’s Sustainable Development Fund – and without their help we would never have got this project off the ground.

"But we got there, and this award is like a pat on the back for all our efforts which is nice."

Brenda Price added: "It was quite an achievement just to be shortlisted, but to pick up the award is fantastic."
