Nearly fifty per cent more cyclists have been taking their bikes to Holland by ferry this year, according to operator Stena Line.

Stena's twice-daily route between Harwich and the Hook of Holland has seen the 46 per cent rise.

The steep jump has been attributed to the Tour de France, which this year starts in Rotterdam (on July 3rd). Sailings over the July 2nd weekend are at 80 per cent capacity, with 55 bicycles booked for the overnight crossing, up from a mere 14 on the day last year.

This year's Tour de France will see Team Sky's debut at the world famous race, headed up by Bradley Wiggins and team managed by British Cycling's Dave Brailsford.
