The design by Product Partners makes use of plastics in all the components and was "a textbook way to do product design and development", according to the judges in the annual Plastics Industry Awards.
Enclosed in the pedal assembly is a miniature dynamo and capacitor that provides power, without the use of batteries, to three flashing LED lights: coloured red to the rear, amber on the side and white to the front.
Fitting is simply a matter of attaching the pedal to the bicycle. As the rider pedals, the gears - made in DuPont's Delrin 100P material by Davall Gears - drive a dynamo that takes just 0.5 percent of the energy used to propel the bike. Energy is stored by the capacitor to allow the light to continue flashing even when the bike stops.
Pedalite pedals cost £49.99 per pair and, to date, are available only via the Pedalite website.
The pedals will be part of the DuPont exhibit at ISPO, the international trade fair for sports equipment and fashion, held in Munich, Germany, 3rd-5th July.
