Five-day paint job graces Simoni's Giro d'Italia Cannondale CAAD7

Gilberto Simoni of the Saeco team started the Giro d'Italia today aboard a custom-painted Cannondale that highlights the team's new lighter cranksets. The bike sports an intricate spider theme, promoting the fact that its Cannondale-designed and manufactured Hollowgram cranksets have a new spider - and chainrings - that have been made 27 grams lighter.

The bicycle was custom-painted by an artist in Bologna, Italy. The intricate spider web art work took a five days to apply, and it is also featured on the bike's lightweight, integrated Slice Si all-carbon fibre fork and its Cinelli Ram combination stem/handlebar.

Last year the team's Fabio Sacchi unveiled a Cannondale CAAD7 with a leopard motif painted by the same artist.

The dedicated Hollowgram crankset and bottom bracket used on Saeco's CAAD7 frames reflect Cannondale's goal of 'System Integration'.

System Integration, says Cannondale, "maximizes both performance and weight savings by developing frames and components concurrently as an integrated system, rather than adhering to the limitations of existing design standards."

In development for more than a year, the Hollowgram crankset/bottom bracket system weighs 643 grams.

System Integration is also used with the CAAD7's head tube and fork, which work without a conventional headset. Instead, the system uses a pair of easily-replaced sealed cartridge bearings. Set directly into CNC-machined recesses inside the frame's oversized head tube, the sealed bearings eliminate heavy headset cups to save weight.
