Cervelo Co-founder Gerard Vroomen has launched an MTB label at the Sea Otter Classic, alongside former Cervelo sales manager Andy Kessler.
Called Open, the brand sets out as it means to go on, claiming to have manufactured the world’s lightest mass production hardtail 29er frame – the O-1.0 – tipping the scales at 900 grams for a large.
With the pair’s backgrounds centred around producing exotic race bikes, its no surprise to learn that an ENVE wheel and Acros hydraulic shifting specced O-1.0, weighing in at just 19lb, is going to set customers back some $12,000.
According to BikeRadar, Vroomen began working on Open a year ago, with the thumbs up from founding Cervelo partner Phil White.
The O-1.0 is to be available in four frame sizes, with reach leaps of 20mm between each. German frame testing firm EFBe are said to have verified the firm’s frame as the lightest they’ve ever passed. Spec wise, the frame uses the asymetric BBright bottom bracket, with a flared downtube for stiffness. The seat tube is setback and thus a little slacker than a traditional frame – Vroomen explains the advantages of that here. Cables are internally routed and the front derailleur is mounted via a S3/E2 front derailleur mount.
No word as yet if the bikes will come to the UK, though BikeBiz will follow up with the firm shortly.
