Government doubles cash for Cycling England

The independent but government-funded expert body charged with getting 'more people cycling, more often' originally requested £70m per year to fund its pro-cycling schemes. It got £5m. In a speech later today the transport minister will announce Cycling England will get £10m a year for the next three years.

The transport minister will tell a transport and climate change conference in Oxford of the government's desire to move away from "the back of the car generation".

"If we can get them into cycling early with a strong focus on safety, there are real potential benefits," Douglas Alexander will say.

"Seemingly small choices like this can have big impacts - for the health of children, on congestion and the environment."
