Two years ago Hutchinson of France started talking about a 'road tubeless' for commuter bikes. It is nearing reality and has been shown to bike editors at PressCamp at the Deer Valley resort, near Park City in Utah.

It's tubeless but not in the same way as standard tubeless; it's not pneumatic. Rather it's an updated version of the foam-filled 'solid' tyre of the 1990s although with a much more pneumatic feel than, say, the Green Tyre.

Steve Boehmke of Chunky Fly Rite Productions showed BikeBiz a near-production prototype of the new tyre and rolled it over a track of sharp nails. Naturally, it stayed 'inflated'.

The final product is likely to be named Serenity and could be available in Spring 2011.

Boemke said the product – to be available in 26inch and 700c – would be perfect for flat-free commuting and would also be perfect for bike share schemes where a puncture can disable a bike and strand a customer.

A nine second video of the Serenity riding over the nail track can be viewed here.
