British Cycling’s Chris Boardman has told BikeBiz he would be interested in becoming Britain’s Cycling Czar, if such a role was created. One of the recommendations in the Get Britain Cycling report is the creation of a Cycling Commissioner.
The Government doesn’t have to implement any of the recommedations in the report, launched today in parliament at a reception paid for by the Bicycle Association.
Plain-speaking Boardman would be a popular choice for the role, were it to be created. He has previously mentioned his desire for the role. However, he told BikeBiz the role would have to have teeth.
Meg Hillier, the MP for Hackney and a former Home Office minister, told Boardman she had been an anti-knife crime commissioner and advised the 1992 gold medal winner on the logistics for becoming a Government ‘Czar’.

At Prime Minister’s Questions, Julian Huppert, the MP for Cambridge, asked whether David Cameron would act on the recommendations in ‘Get Britain Cycling’.
The Prime Minister said: “We should be doing much more in our country to encourage cycling. I think this report has many good points in it.
“I would commend what the Mayor of London has done in London to promote cycling and I hope will authorities will follow his lead in making sure that we do more.”
