Due to be staged on 4th July – why pick that date, we wonder? – this will be third annual staging of Independents' Day.

Independents’ Day promotes buying from indie retailers

The Independents’ Day campaign is designed to encourage the public to shop in independent retailers. It is Organised by the National Skills Academy for Retail, and is now in its third year.

Over the next three months, retailers are being encouraged to download the campaign posters and other supporting materials from www.retailindieday.com, organise celebratory in-store events and join forces with other retailers, town centre teams, and skills shops, for town-wide celebrations.

Additionally, this year, the campaign has joined forces with Independent Retailer Month, which runs throughout July, meaning Independents’ Day will kick start a whole month of celebration of the independent retail sector.

“Independent retailers make up 92 per cent of all retail businesses in the UK and their contribution to a location’s identity and community is unrivalled,” said Jane Rexworthy, head of the National Skills Academy for Retail.

“We recognise how important they are to local economies and to create a healthier high street, and we are delighted to give independent retailers a voice to reach out to the public. Throughout the campaign, we aim to raise the importance of independent retailers with consumers, encouraging people to shop locally, throughout the year, and particularly on Thursday 4th July.
