British Olympic and World Champion track cyclist Victoria Pendleton had a brief chat with BikeBiz about training, the Olympics and Bike Week. Jonathon Harker takes notes…

INTERVIEW: Victoria Pendleton

How did you get involved in Team Green Britain Bike Week? And how are you getting behind the cause?
I was a Team Green Britain ambassador last year and was asked by EDF Energy to be part of it again this year. This movement to tackle climate change has grown massively with different projects. The Bike Week association was a great fit and I am really please to be involved.

You’ve been pretty active in advocating the world of cycling with a long-running association with Team Green Britain, supporting Bike Week and signing up for Sky rides. Is it all about encouraging the next generation of Olympians, or just getting more people on bikes?
It is about getting people on bikes primarily making Britain more of a cycling nation. I am sure as a result there will be some future stars discovered, but the whole Team Green Britain Bike Week idea is to encourage everyday people to consider making everyday journeys on a bike rather than just picking up the car keys. To reduce carbon emissions, keep fit and healthy and it will save money too.

You’ve designed a bicycle for Team Green Britain Bike Week – could you imagine getting into designing bikes in the future like Chris Boardman has?
I am not technically minded like Chris! I would be more interested in designing the cycling attire. I would need a lot of help! I enjoyed designing my Team Green Britain style bike though.

You’ve had a great year with your success in Copenhagen. What are you focusing on next?
I have actually had quite a long break on the advice of my managers and team mates, as it will be the last opportunity until after London 2012. I am not very good at taking holidays. I am training for the world cup season starting in October to start collecting qualification points for the Olympics.
