Islabikes is launching in the US on April 15th and has chosen to locate in Portland, Oregon, America's most bicycle-friendly city. The company famously sells its childrens' bikes direct to consumers and does not retail via bike shops. The US operation is to be run by long-time Islabike's employee Tim Goodall, who is relocating to Portland.
The Islabike brand is extremely popular in the UK with "cycling parents", who often despair at the heavy, over-engineered bicycles offered by many other bicycle brands. British Cycling's Go Ride cycling clubs tend to be very 'Islabike-heavy', with the company specialising in no-frills childrens' bicycles with scaled-down components and lightweight frames.
