Dowjones.com won the first prize and bikebiz.co.uk shared the runners-up spoils with bbc.co.uk. To be joint second with one of the worlds biggest and best funded websites is quite an honour for a site produced in a back bedroom.
In yesterdays Guardian there was a two page article on the European Online Journalism Awards where it was predicted that bbc.co.uk would walk off with the majority of the awards in the 14 categories they were shortlisted for. In the event they did wipe the floor with most other sites as the BBC has been telling viewers on telly today but with an annual budget of £26m, their strength isnt surprising.
Bikebiz.co.uk was shortlisted for best business and economics site as well as the site with the best mobile connectivity ie our WAP site. We didn't win either category.
Entries for the awards came from all over Europe and there was an international judging panel.
These judges, and the 400 journalists present at the glittering awards ceremony, were exposed to a small site aimed at a small trade (produced by a small editor), proving that the internet can be a great leveller.
