Sustrans’ Safe Routes to School Scheme and Young TransNet have formed a new partnership to promote independent and safe travel for children throughout every region of the UK.
The partnership will enable both organisations to be more efficient in offering information resources to children, teachers, parents and local authorities when considering local travel policy and how it affects young people, said a Sustrans spokesman.
Both projects are concerned with giving children opportunities to travel more independently and without total reliance on the car. Young TransNet is a web based initiative aiming to involve young people in decision-making about transport and to increase the awareness of decision and policy makers that children desire independent travel.
Sustrans’ Safe Routes to Schools scheme is a national project working with schools, local authorities and government departments to disseminate best practice.
Rhian Barnes, Sustrans’ senior project officer, said:
"Safe Routes to Schools Schemes are reducing road casualties by up to 70 percent and helping to get young people actively travelling to school, reducing traffic and tackling the growing levels of obesity."
Andrew Stuck, project manager for Young TransNet, said:
"We are delighted to strengthen our links with Sustrans’ Safe Routes to Schools team. They have offered advice to the Young TransNet project since its inception and bring many years of experience to Young TransNet. Together we can campaign for greater opportunities for children and young people to enjoy independent sustainable travel not only to school, but in the broader community."
