European Union cash is being used to give away free bikes in Liverpool. 100 bikes will be on offer as part of the ‘Travelwise’ project, according to the Liverpool Echo. Residents right across the Liverpool area – stretching across Anfield, Everton, Dingle, Wavertree and Old Swan – will be able to take advantage of the offer.
The project has initially been planned to run until April, but if there is proven demand then the Travelwise project will apply for further EU funding for more free bikes. As part of the scheme locals will be offered cycle skills training, free ‘Dr Bike’ bicycle repair sessions and maintenance courses. The scheme is aimed at both commuters and recreation riders.
“More and more people are rediscovering cycling can get them where they need to be quickly, reliably, at low cost and with benefits to their health and the environment,” said Cllr Peter Millea, executive member for assets and development.
“Increasing cycling is part of our vision for Liverpool’s future and is particularly important in our Year of the Environment.”
