Transport emissions can be cut drastically in London – by as much as half in a little over 15 years - according to a new study, as reported on Road.cc.

The VIBAT (visioning and backcasting for transport in London) study, produced by Halcrow and the University of Oxford, has found that the capital’s transport emissions can be reduced by up to 60 per cent by 2025, and then by 80 per cent by 2050. Those targets can be achieved through the combined impact of various ecologically sound-policies.

Dr Robin Hickman, Halcrow project manager and research fellow at Oxford's transport studies unit, commented on the kind of policies that would help London hit the ambitious targets: “The findings from this study demonstrate how effective packaging of a wide range of interventions – including promoting low emission vehicles, investment in public transport, walking and cycling, behavioural change measures, promoting ecological driving and slower speeds and freight planning – can help London move towards a 60 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025 and onto even deeper cuts beyond”.

The study was funded by the University of London’s UrbanBuzz programme – an initiative that aims to develop sustainable ways to develop in London and the South East.
