Hardisty Cycles, of Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, is the biggest IBD in the north east of England, and one of the most respected IBDs in the whole of the UK, with a host of top accounts.
From 1979 onwards, John and Margaret Hardisty turned a wholesale TV aerial business that one day repaired – and quickly sold on – a few second-hand bikes into one of the most powerful IBDs in the country.
Hardisty Cycles has 93 percent brand recognition in the north east, making it more recognised than Halfords. One of the reasons for Margaret and John’s success was their bold advertising campaigns, on both television and radio. The shop’s famous jingle could be recited by most north eastern cyclists, and many non-cyclists too.
Margaret owned up to the age of ‘fiftyish’ in an interview with BicycleBusiness in 1999. She and John had three children: Phillipa, 30, Harry, 28, and Sally, 26.
