A Belfast school has been handed a Sustrans prize as part of the Giro Schools Challenge, with its students racking up the highest mileage to and from school.
St Marys’ Christian Brothers’ Grammar School were presented the gong by Minister for Education, John O’Dowd and Public Health Agency CE Dr Eddie Rooney.
During his visit to the school, Minister O’Dowd said: “I want to congratulate St Mary`s Christian Brothers’ Grammar School on winning first place overall in the ‘Cycling School’ category of the Giro Schools Challenge. This is a wonderful achievement for the boys and deserving recognition of their efforts during the Giro Schools Challenge.
“It is vital that young people get into the habit of living healthy, active lifestyles. Cycling is an excellent way to achieve this and the Giro coming here can only help promote cycling and keeping active among local young people.”
70,155 active journeys were made by schools within the duration of the ten day competition.
St Marys students will now be treated to a display by Flatland BMX Athlete [Mick Gillespie].
