"My challenge will be to show visitors to National Trust
properties what great fun cycling can be, said the recently appointed Gina Upex.
People are often put off cycling to National Trust properties by the busy roads. And often, even if they plan to ride in our parks, they rack bikes on to their cars and drive. If people can be given the confidence and a safer way to get into the parks, we might be able to persuade people to make the change."
The National Trust is increasing its efforts to reduce traffic generated by
visitors to its properties. Working with Sustrans, the Trusts Green Transport and Travel Group is exploring wide-ranging ideas
to encourage people to use cars less when visiting properties or enjoying
the precious landscapes and countryside in the National Trusts
care.
The Trusts 2000 Handbook includes details of the emerging National
Cycle Network.
Ben Hamilton-Baillie, Sustrans South West and Wales Regional Manager, who advises the Trusts Transport & Travel Group, said: It is clear that the National Trust is taking its transport responsibilities very seriously. It is encouraging to see such a wide range of new ideas under development. At present the vast majority of visits to National Trust properties are by car, and there is much to be done. However, the co-operation between Sustrans and the Trust on this issue will bring clear benefits. The Trusts work will provide a lead for many others to follow.
