Shift Active Media of the UK has worked with Google to create the Global Cycling Network. On-air experts include David Millar.

New and free YouTube cycling channel to launch in January

The Global Cycling Network launches on January 1st and is a free YouTube ‘Original Content’ channel. Shift Active Media of Bath has created the channel in partnership with Google. The channel will feature road and mountain bike race coverage as well as more general content.

A line-up of original TV-style programming includes behind the scenes access to the Grand Tours and events, a weekly news programme, and a weekly schedule of videos based on techniques and ‘how tos’, plus regular Google+ Hangouts. The roster of cycling experts on the team include David Millar, captain of Team Garmin-Sharp- Barracuda, and ex pro-cyclist Dan Lloyd. The England and Arsenal FC footballer and TV presenter, Lee Dixon, will also have presenting duties on the channel.

Shift Active Media is currently recruiting other cycling video producers to join GCN, and will announce brand partners and an affiliate producer programme closer to launch, said Simon Wear, founder of Shift.

“Our core media communications business has become increasingly driven by the creation of high quality bespoke video content for brands to communicate through both broadcast and online channels, and we believe the Global Cycling Network will make a positive contribution to brands and media owners alike," said Wear, a former chief operating officer at Future Publishing.

"Our goal is for this network to benefit the whole of the cycling industry. By developing unique content and working with other media owners and brands together we can create a thriving vibrant cycling community on YouTube.

"From environmental and health concerns, through to a growing focus on the sport of cycling, the interest in cycling has never been stronger.”

Andrew Croker, chairman of Shift Active Media, said: “It’s a great opportunity to work hand in hand with one of the world’s most innovative technology companies. Together with various race and rights holders around the world, we will be working to establish the Global Cycling Network as the essential cycling channel.”
