RoadSafe is launched today and is a "pan-industry organisation whose purpose is to reduce road accidents and promote safer driving." It has been spawned from the long-running Prince Michael Road Safety Awards. The Bicycle Association is one of the founder supporters of RoadSafe.

New road safety campaign group launched

Other early supporters include the British Horse Society, many car manufacturers, the Motor Cycle Industry Association and RoSPA.

However, there’s no CTC, ACT, CoBR or British Cycling.

The new organisation aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by road accidents and promote safer driving. However, as car manufacturers have recently forced the government to water down proposals for all future cars to be ‘pedestrian friendly'(ie designed to lessen low speed impacts on soft flesh) it’s not altogether clear whether car manufacturers are genuinely interested in road safety for non-occupants of cars.

Looking on the bright side, RoadSafe is chaired by former transport minister, Steve Norris, who recently also accepted the one day a week, voluntary position as first chair of the National Cycling Strategy Board.

At a conference in London, where RoadSafe was launched today, Norris said:

"For more than 14 years, the Prince Michael Road Safety Awards scheme has taken the lead in focusing national efforts to cut road accidents. It has made a significant impact but the hard fact is that over 3000 people are still killed on Britain’s roads every year, with thousands more injured. We have to ask ourselves: What more can be done?

"We believe that RoadSafe can make a real contribution by putting in placeideas and actions which can reduce casualty figures."
