Figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index indicate that online retailers saw strong growth in July, as reported by the Retail Bulletin.

Online sales for the month were up 15.7 per cent on June and figures also rose by 16.8 per cent compared with July 2008. £4.2 billion was spent online during July 2009.

IMRG director of Information Tina Spooner said: “Online retail continues to outperform the high street with e-retail growth in July exceeding the yearly growth seen in July 2008. It is evident that online merchants are becoming more sophisticated in their marketing efforts and email communications to their customers, the result of which can be seen in higher conversion rates, particularly in the clothing sector.”

But according to a range of sources it wasn’t just online that saw a strong sales month, with retail in general putting in a solid performance. Retail footfall rose for the second consecutive month in July, retail sales were up 3.3 per cent compared with July 2008, while bike sales also gained significantly in July.
