OS kiosk maps cost a quid each

As sales of its traditionally printed maps drop, the Ordnance Survey is trialling a map printing service from internet kiosks where users can print out just the section of mapping they need.

Many Internet users download street and country maps from sites such as streetmap.co.uk. Consequently, sales of traditional OS maps, such as the Land Ranger 1:50 000 series, are falling.

Ordnance Survey is fighting back by going digital. The government agency is trialling a booth which prints out a section of map at a desired scale on an A4 sheet for £1.

The first kiosk has been installed at the New Forest Visitor Centre in Lyndhurst in Hampshire and is aimed at stimulating sales from cyclists and walkers.

Internet kiosks are also being planned for motorway service stations and will print out large scale, up to date maps of the road network.
