Cambridge’s Howes – named the world’s oldest bike shop – closed for good at the end of 2013. Last year it was revealed the iconic shop would be replaced by a pub, which has now opened for business.
The new bar pays tribute to Howes and is named the ‘Old Bicycle Shop’. It opened today at 104 Regent Street and plays on the bike retail heritage, noting that Charles Darwin was said to have bought a bike from the shop. Cycle paraphenalia has been used to decorate the interior walls.
According to the Cambridge News Michael Howes, the previous owner, coincidentally walked past as the old Howes Cycle sign was being painted over during the refit.
