Public want to see more bobbies on bikes

Earlier this week the BBC website - one of the most visited sites in the world - carried a poll to vote on ten 'social innovation' ideas supplied by readers. With 23 percent of the global vote, the winner was a scheme to make sections of tipping sites open to the public so 'rubbish' could be examined and possibly recycled. The idea with the next highest number of votes was for 'more police to patrol on bicycles'. The poll is now closed and was to mark International Social Innovations Day.

Brenda Lyall of the UK supplied this idea:

More police to patrol on bicycles - bikes are environmentally friendly and allow officers to go on footpaths/tracks inaccessible to cars. This also makes police presence stronger as officers can stop to talk to people and get in touch with the neighbourhood.

This polled 15.3 percent of the 8000+ votes.
