The £14m factory in Bulwell has cleared its first hurdle but because of environmental sensitivities – the factory will displace about 50 allotment holders who have helped to raise a 4500-name petition against the scheme – could be called in for review by the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions, Stephen Byers.
“Enough time has been allowed in the project timetable for this [review],” Raleigh MD Philip Darnton, told bikebiz.co.uk.
Raleigh has to vacate its Triumph Road site by 2003, following the sale of the land to the University of Nottingham.
Raleigh’s long links with Nottingham were threatened when the city council could find no other suitable land for a new factory and the pressure has been on for the council to approve the move to Bulwell, despite the opposition of allotment holders and organisations such as the Notts Wildlife Trust, which fears bats will be displaced by the building of the 250,000sq ft factory on the 14 acre site.
