RALEIGH ANNOUNCES PLANS TO STAY IN NOTTINGHAM
Raleigh Industries Ltd has announced that Nottingham City Council has earmarked a 14-acre site next to the Blenheim Industrial Estate in Bulwell for the relocation of its current Triumph Road operations. This will allow the company to move into a modern, purpose-designed facility within 5 miles of its current location.
Raleigh, which has been designing and building bikes in Nottingham for the last 112 years, is due to vacate its Triumph Road premises towards the end of 2003 following the sale of the site to the University of Nottingham. Construction work at the new site is scheduled to start towards the end of 2001 and the facility should be fully operational by the autumn of 2003.
"We have always stated that our main priority was to keep Raleigh in Nottingham, both for the sake of our employees and to safeguard the heritage of the company which is indelibly linked to the City. To this end, we have been working closely with Nottingham City Council, as well as with land agents and industrial designers, to find an appropriate location within the City of Nottingham, within reasonable distance of Triumph Road and accessible by public transport.
"Not only does the new site meet all of these criteria, it also gives us the opportunity to redevelop Raleigh and design our factory to make us even more competitive in the UK bicycle market," comments Phillip Darnton, Raleighs managing director.
The Parts & Accessories division of Raleigh has already relocated to a purpose built office and distribution centre just outside Nottingham, to accommodate the growth of their business.
