San Francisco boosts bike safety with free lights

City takes a softly, softly approach to law breaking cyclists

Bicycle lights are being handed out cyclists in San Francisco free of charge as part of a 'Light up the Night' campaign, as reported in the San Francisco Sentinel.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is working with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition to distribute the front and rear lights to cyclists.

Law requires cyclists to have a white front light and red rear reflector, and the campaign – where 2,400 red and white blinking lights will be distributed – is targeting those who are unaware of the regulations.

Free bike safety education classes will be offered in a variety of languages to reach out to as wide a number of residents as possible, with the lights also offered to those who complete the safety course.
