14th International Bicycle Design Awards honour Taiwanese designer Hsi Huang

Shopping Bike bags top prize at Taipei

The designer of a ‘Shopping Bike’ walked away with NT$500,000 after winning the Grand Prize of the 2010 International Bicycle Design Awards.

Taiwanese designer Hsi Huang’s creation – a folding bike that transforms into a shopping cart – impressed the judges in terms of its functionality and convenience. Huang had studied industrial product design and said that a booming bike market had driven him to design for the sector.

Previous winners have gone on to work for manufacturers in the bike industry, according to the IBDC, which aims to influence current bicycle design.

This year the awards saw 720 registrations from 49 countries. A total of NT$1.175m was awarded to prize winners on the night and entries for the 2011 edition of the awards will open from the start of next month (April 1st 2010).
