An economic impact study by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance has demonstrated last year's world road cycling championships in Hamilton, Canada, generated turnover of $31.1m for the city and $17.2m for the rest of Ontario. The spend by the city was just $4.5m.

The races themselves turned a profit of $1.1m. Canada’s National Post newspaper quotes David Braley, who chaired the race organising committee: "[I’ve] never been prouder of my hometown."

At the time, many Hamilton residents complained about the coming of the world championships, citing traffic restrictions and residential neighbourhood disruption.

Final accounting figures are being audited, said The Post, and will be submitted to federal and provincial governments.
