In the 1967 album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the Pink Floyd frontman wrote a song called ‘Bike’.
I’ve got a bike,
You can ride it if you like
It’s got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good
I’d give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it
In 1972, following years of LSD abuse, Barrett had a nervous breakdown and went into hiding, becoming a semi-recluse. He lived in Cambridge and, naturally, got around this bike-friendly town by bicycle.
An auction of Barrett’s possessions – including the two bicycles he hand-painted himself – will be held at Cheffins of Cambridge on November 29th and 30th.
