Tesco, the UK’s largest retailer, has been working with Cyclescheme to launch the UK’s biggest private sector ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme this week, in a move to encourage its 300,000 UK colleagues to switch to commuting on two wheels.
If just one per cent of colleagues take up the Cycle to Work scheme, that could equate to 12,888 car journeys being replaced by cycle journeys and over 117 tonnes of CO2 offset each month.
Cyclescheme works with over 1,900 independent bike shops.
Judith Nelson, personnel director for Tesco in the UK & RoI, said: “I’m really pleased that we are launching our Cycle to Work scheme for colleagues. By making it easier and more appealing for our people to live healthier lives, we are using our scale for good to make a positive difference in society.”
Cyclescheme currently works with over 50 Government departments and agencies including HMRC, the Office of Fair Trading (OfT), the Department for Transport (DfT) plus 200 Councils, 20 Fire Authorities and 10 Police Authorities. Additionally, over 30,000 clients choose Cyclescheme as their Cycle to Work provider, which has resulted in nearly 350,000 participants taking part in the scheme.
