Tescos' Computers for Schools voucher collection scheme will be rested until November. Taking its place will be Tesco Sport for Schools & Clubs, a voucher scheme that will "inspire the UK’s children to get fitter and healthier." The multi-million pound scheme goes live across all Tesco stores on 12th September. Perhaps mad-keen cyclists could donate their vouchers to cycling clubs that operate Go Ride programmes for children?

Tescos ditches computers in favour of school and club sports

The Tesco Sport for Schools & Clubs scheme is the result of extensive research with parents, teachers and club organisers, said a statement from the nation’s favourite grocer (and retailer of cheap flat-packed bikes).

"They said they would welcome a move that would provide much needed equipment – and essential coaching resources which would truly enthuse children to get involved in sport."

35 000 schools and clubs will be mailed with a Tescos sport-pomoting DVD to use in PE lessons and club coaching sessions. The scheme will be promoted in TV and print adverts.

Tesco’s marketing director, Tim Mason said: “I’ve spent many years in retail, working to understand consumers and I believe that parents have never been clearer that they need to do something about their children’s health. Exercise is also an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and Tesco Sports for Schools and Clubs will help many children and their families to be inspired, get involved and become fitter and healthier.”

There’s no info yet on the mechanics of the scheme on a Tescos microsite. The sports mentioned in a Tescos statement are football, athletics, rugby and tennis.

Tescos customers will receive one voucher for every £10 spent.

The voucher collection scheme will run from 12th September to 6th November 2005. Equipment will be delivered during the spring 2006 term.
