86 year old bike shop closes, pics from Cycle Show 2013, Boardman and Halfords stick together...and videos from Thule, Zipp and Stan's Cycles

Top stories of the week on BikeBiz, 4th October 2013

Caught up after Cycle Show yet? Us neither. If you’ve had a busy one, here’s a handy digest of our most read stories of the week:

Holdsworth Cycles to shut after 86 years
It’s never nice to hear of a bike shop shutting, but it’s especially glum when that shop has been around for decades. Putney’s Holdsworth Cycles, which opened before World War Two, is closing this month. Ironically, this news came shortly after a report revealing that more independent bike dealers are opening stores this year.

Cycle Show 2013: photo gallery
Last week the trade descended on the NEC. We’ll have our full report in the upcoming issue of BikeBiz, but in the meantime we’ve some photos to flick through on our Facebook pages.

Boardman Bikes and Halfords sign ten year deal
Evidently the relationship formed in 2007 is paying dividends for Halfords and Boardman Bikes as they’ve just signed their deal for a further decade. We were at this week’s 2014 range launch and have got the pictures to prove it plus some data on how Halfords is revamping its cycle offering.

BikeBiz Awards 2013: The winners in full
Not only was it Cycle Show last week but it was also our own BikeBiz Awards. See the full list of winners on the link above or take a gander at our gallery here.

Muc-Off secures £1.95m investment, creates new jobs
Via Santander’s Breaththrough programme, Muc-Off has got its hands on a sizeable investment, with five new jobs created and boosting marketing for the brand.

Eurobike round-up
Handily split into four articles, you can find our Eurobike report here, here, here and indeed here. It also appeared in the October edition of the mag, if you prefer print to the web.

But enough of words: We’ve got three videos for you this week collected from the bicycle trade. First up is a science-heavy video explaining Zipp’s Firecrest rim tech. There’s air flow charts, diagrams and everything:

Moving on, Thule has teamed up with Epic TV for a video submission competition. Find out how to win a load of swag by watching the brief Eurobike-filmed vid below:

Finally, we have video proof that IBDs spend all day riding around their shops. Well that’s how they spend the day at Stan’s Cycles (before nipping out into the great outdoors). The video shows John Owen, who runs the MTB floor in the shop, riding around the store and Haughmond Hill, near Shrewsbury.

Apparently Stan’s Cycles’ building was a morgue during the war and a night club in the ’60s where The Who played, trivia fans. They do nice coffee in the 1st floor bar too, we’re told.
