At 10.30am the 500-mile race will start from Glasgow’s George Square and finish six days later on Sunday 4th September, in London’s Whitehall. Glasgow was given a wee taste of the tour last night when a George Square Criterium - the Glasgow Grand Prix - got the best of the day's sunshine. Bikie VIPs were out in force. Two were wrapped up warm in Gore-Tex jackets and overtrousers: last year's podium girls have been re-hired for the all-important post-race smoochy-smoochy.

Tour of Britain starts in Glasgow

The Tour of Britain is funded by a multitude of sponsors, including regional development agencies.

EventScotland secured public sector funding of £450 000 in a three year deal for the tour.

The event comprises 16 teams with 96 elite professional cyclists competing for world championship points as they race from Scotland, through the Northwest of England, Yorkshire, the East and West Midlands, finishing in London.

Last year every funding partner region said they showed a positive return on their initial financial investment with economic return coming from visitor and organisation spend in the region and media exposure of more than six figures from national and international media coverage.
