Tyneside’s M Steel Cycles shuts (it’s been trading since 1894)

One of Tyneside’s leading bicycle shops has closed. M Steel Cycles had been trading since 1894.

The news was broken on the shop’s Instagram account. It has not yet been carried on the shop’s Twitter feed or website.

"We are saddened to inform you that M Steel Cycles has, as from today, ceased trading," says the Instagram posting.

M Steel Cycles has been a fixture on Station Road in Gosforth for many years. In 2008 it moved sideways to a new premises, a former fishing tackle shop. The store was owned by former road pro Joe Waugh.

Former owners included Geoff Dobson and framebuilder Dave Yates. M Steel Cycles was once the retail outlet for frames and bikes branded with the names Dave Yates and Joe Waugh.

The Dave Yates marque was a mountain bike innovator in the 1980s.
