The number of US-made bikes being exported has dropped by three per cent in the third quarter, according to Bicycle Retailer.

The fall – the equivalent of 1,288 units – saw the number of US bikes taken on by Mexico and Latin America drop significantly. However, increased exports to Pacific Rim and European countries – including the UK – lessened the impact of the drop to the Americas.

The strength of the European market has, according to the report, helped smaller US manufacturers through tough times in the American bike market. Europe imported 429 more US road and mountain bikes this year compared with the last. Unit value dropped 20 per cent in the same period.

Larger wheel exports were down seven per cent, while smaller wheel bikes were up 861 units, with an average unit value up a dollar compares with last year, reaching $213. Meanwhile frame and fork sales grew one per cent.
