On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal plugged folding bikes in an article headlined 'The Folding Bike Goes Cool' and with a subhead of 'Once the pocket protector of the cycling world, these adaptable rides have evolved into a stylish mode of transport'.

US print circulation for the Wall Street Journal is 1.7 million with more views online, including internationally.

The WSJ reporter said: "because of, their acrobatic prowess, owning [a folding bike] has always had a certain nerdiness attached to it. Like a calculator watch, they're just too convenient to be fashionable.

"But folding bikes are now mainstream. Some have co-opted the style of their more respected full-sized brethren. Others, like the classic Brompton, have become icons themselves."

Folding bikes featured include the Puma Pico, the Brompton M3L, the Dahon Smooth Hound and the Montague full-size Crosstown.

David Criswell, Marketing Manager for Montague Bikes, said:

“Our phones have been ringing off the hook with people who saw this weekend’s coverage. We are hearing interest from both new and experienced bike riders that having a full-size bike and the portability of a folding bike is very appealing.

“Coverage like this is invaluable for us and for the folding bike market."
